“Darling, don’t ever be too shy to dance your heart out”, Audrey Hepburn.
We often have music on in the background at our place. It can set the vibe of the day; allows for impromptu dance parties; and if someone’s having a ‘moment’ (parent, or child), we can often find a song to turn the mood around. We even use Pharrell Willliams’ ‘Happy’ as our ‘tidy up’ song! It works well (most of the time), when we want to encourage the kids to race around and tidy up as many books and toys as they can before the end of the song.
Since starting this parenting gig back in 2011, we’ve listened to A LOT of songs aimed at kids. And while ‘Justine Clarke’ is still a big favourite of ours, sometimes it can be nice to rock out to something other than songs about jelly, or teddy bears.
But have you ever had the radio tunes pumpin’, kids dancing, and suddenly had to scramble for the volume when you’ve realised what the lyrics actually are? I’m looking at you, Bruno Mars and your ‘Locked out of Heaven’ chorus! I love the dance-ability of that song, but once our littlies started singing along to songs, that one had to be reserved for ‘Mummy only’ dance parties.
Fortunately, a lovely seven year old friend of ours recently introduced us to the wonders of Spotify (a free music, podcast and video streaming service).
The first thing I did, once I downloaded Spotify (you can do this for free), was to create a playlist. It’s twelve of our favourite, fun, upbeat, ‘grown up’ songs with clean lyrics. Feel free to download the playlist below and enjoy with your own kids!
You may not find too many deep and meaningful lyrics here, but these songs are sure to make you want to get up and dance. And at least you don’t have to worry about the kids repeating the lyrics in front of Grandma!
Each family is different in regards to what they consider appropriate, so if you’d like to see the full lyrics, simply click on the song title to any song below.
Special thanks to ‘DJ Abbs’ for introducing us to Spotify and for her great song suggestions!
